Philosopher Who Argued for Free Speech
“Society can and does execute its own mandates: and if it issues wrong mandates instead of right, or any mandates at all in things with it ought not to meddle, it practices a social tyranny more formidable than many kinds of political oppression, since, though not usually upheld by such extreme penalties, it leaves fewer means of escape, penetrating much more deeply into the details of life, and enslaving the soul itself {On Liberty}.” Unfortunately, Mr. Mills was one of the last voices who passionately and genuinely believed in free speech. Though many would utter similar rhetoric in the 20th century, they were caught up in the many newly formed techniques to give the press the appearance of being free while promoting hidden voices with hidden socialistic agendas.
